Clothing should be liberating. What you put on in the morning should never restrict what you do with your day. We make garments that evolve around the boundaries of fashion using a function driven design process and high quality technical fabrics.
The world does not need more design; it needs less. As designers we must wake up to this challenge every day if we wish to truly create objects worth creating. Honesty, experimentation, and a commitment to learning from history are our best tools.
One well considered object can take the place of many cheaply made ones. We think the traditional fashion system is flawed and that it is possible to create higher quality garments at better prices by rethinking traditional cycles of development, production and distribution.
Profit should never be the reason a company exists. Businesses need money the same way humans need water. It is essential to function, but the less we need to think about it the better off we are. A healthy organization creates value that extends far beyond money and into all points of its operation; from suppliers to employees and from customers into communities.
Outlier began with one particularly elusive value: an intense feeling of exhilaration and liberation that comes from riding in the city. With Outlier we want to take that feeling and bring it everywhere we travel.
Our garments are built to perform better every day. Our first product was a pair of pants designed around bike commuting. An item designed to extend the freedom of a cyclist into the broadest range of possibilities. We still make a version of those OG Pants but we rapidly evolved into something more dynamic, a company that makes innovative and good looking clothing to improve the way you move through this world.
With any luck we'll soon evolve even further, but regardless of where we end up we never could have done it without the support of an incredible network of customers, suppliers, and friends. More than anything our goal is to build Outlier into a company worthy of your respect. One step at a time we move into the future.

Outlier was born in the Spring of 2008, in Brooklyn, NY, when a barista named Jenni Bryant realized two of her regular customers needed to meet. Abe Burmeister had been experimenting with making a better pair of pants for his bike commute while Tyler Clemens had been doing the same thing with shirts. They quickly realized they were trying to solve nearly identical problems and in June of 2008 Outlier was incorporated.
The name itself dates back to 2007 and Abe's earlier attempts to turn his pants into reality. The black swan logo came naturally as it is symbolic of an outlier. Abe's pants were a bit further along than Tyler's shirts so they became Outlier's original garment, the OG Pants (pictured left). Between the two of them they shared just a years worth of experience in the clothing world; Abe had been an animator and graphic designer while Tyler had worked in media and a record store before a brief stint working with a shirtmaker. What they did have was New York City's Garment District, where they learned to make clothes the hard way.
In November of 2008, in the midst of a global economic catastrophe, Abe and Tyler publicly launched the OG Pants on their website and Outlier was in business. The first sale came from Australia, and Outlier has been online based ever since, shipping worldwide from Brooklyn. They continued experimenting, iterating, and refining; developing more products built around the idea of using world class technical fabrics to bring menswear (and womenswear!) traditions into the 21st century.
Outlier grew rapidly though 2009 and Tyler soon was able to quit his day job. By the end of the year they had their first full time employee, and by 2010 Abe was able to drop his remaining freelance gigs and join full time as well. In June Outlier moved their offices out of Tyler's living room and into a loft space on the edge of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. That studio is a lot more crowded now, but it remains a space where clothing is torn apart, reconsidered and iterated on in a continual pursuit of an impossible perfection.

Our clothes are best understood by wearing them, so rest assured you can try our stuff on and see just how well it works for you. We stand behind our product and want you to be completely happy with it. If for any reason you are not satisfied, just send us an email and we'll work with you to make things right. For a return or exchange, just fill out this form to get started.
Items can be returned for any reason for up to 45 days after purchase. We even offer free return shipping on US orders. Just make sure they are clean - the big exception is that we don't accept returns that smell or are otherwise unsanitary.
This policy applies to all items on our site except when clearly labeled otherwise.
We want to make the return process as easy as possible for you. When sending the package to us, if you can include any information such as your full name, billing/shipping address, order number, or email address, it will help us get an exchange back out to you as soon as possible. If you're exchanging your purchase for a new item, please let us know the new item you would like--style, size and color.

Unfortunately due to international customs and shipping we can not cover the return shipping fees, but we do cover outbound international shipping for exchanges. Once the shipment is received back, we will email you to let you know the status.
Upon receiving your return, it may take up to 4 to 5 business days for your return and refund to be processed. Once this happens, you'll receive an email notification confirming the refund. The money is taken from our account immediately, but it may take a few days for it show up on your credit card account. Each credit card company handles refunds differently so we can not give precise times on when you will get your money back.
We'll give a refund for any returns up to 45 days from purchase.
We ship to just about anywhere in the world.
We ship to the US, Canada, Europe, Australia and Japan all the time and our ecommerce system is set up to take orders from nearly anywhere in the world.
If you are encountering trouble from some reason in entering an order it might be because of an issue with our postal provider. If so please send us an email and we'll try to figure out how to best ship an order to you.
Please also note that customs clearance is different in every country and that you may be charged additional fees, tariffs and brokerage fees on top of the postage charges. These additional charges are your responsibility.
Shipping cost is dependent on the destination, weight and speed. Generally speaking, shipping starts at $9. You can get an accurate quote by stepping through the checkout process and entering your shipping address. There you will see the options available.
For international orders, we ship to most countries in the world and the rates are generated in real time during the checkout process. Please also be aware that you may be charged additional customs fees, taxes, tariffs, duties and brokerage fees in the country of delivery. These fees vary widely by country and are your responsibility.
We ship Monday through Friday and we try to process all orders within 24 hours after receiving them, but we are a small company and in super busy times it may take slightly longer. All domestic packages are shipped by UPS mail and depending on the shipping option you have chosen, your delivery will be one of the following:
UPS Ground - 3 to 5 business days
UPS 2nd Day Air - 2 business days
UPS Next Day Air - Overnight
For International orders there is an option to ship by UPS, and by USPS in select countries. They will usually arrive within a couple weeks, but occasionally might get held up in customs. Once your order has been completed, you will receive an email confirmation with your UPS or USPS tracking number.
For international shipments please allow for 1-2 weeks for delivery as delivery times vary greatly depending on how fast they clear customs. Items sent via UPS Saver or Expedited often will arrive in just a few days but this is not guaranteed.

If you choose Hold for Pickup when checking out, we'll pull your order and set it aside here in our studios. The best time to pick up is during our Open Studio every Friday, which is between 2 and 5pm during the summer. These orders can also be picked up between 12 to 6pm Monday through Thursday. Please note that these hours are for pickup only. We are absolutely not set up for try ons or exchanges except during our Open Studio hours.

We do our best to restock products as fast as we can. If you would like to be notified when a particular product is back in stock, please visit the individual product page and click the "Notify me about restock events" link right below the purchase button.
If you're looking for a specific size or color, we recommend checking in Thursday nights or Friday mornings. We do small, casual restocks on Thursday evenings so what you're looking for may become available then.

We are looking for a quick learning and detail oriented person to help with the production of our products. Must be highly organized, a clear communicator and a problem solver who values simplicity. p>
We produce many of our products locally in small factories, so this job requires being willing to do hands on work in chaotic environments. This sometimes means manual labor. It also requires a good head for data and being able to work with spreadsheets and tech packs. Understanding how to read patterns, garment and grading specs is a must. A deep love of quality and quality control is also essential, as is a desire to continuously improve, including building new relationships with new factories, both locally and worldwide. p>
Production management BA or another relevant degree is a plus but not required. p>
